Test of Faith
The true test of faith comes during depression,
believing that there is goodness within me
although all I can see is dark emptiness, failure and self-pity,
believing that there is a purpose for me to keep living
although it’s impossible to think of one,
believing that this overwhelming shadow can be whisked
away by someone’s loving gesture
although I can’t imagine how
or remember when it happened in the past.
The true test of faith is not believing in God
or subscribing to a certain image of God,
but rather believing in my own goodness.
