Deeper

I think about the woman at the well

and how Jesus engaged her with dignity and respect,

connected with her as an equal – fully human, fully divine,

how he loved her freely and completely

with warmth, affection and endearment.

I think about how Jesus loved his dear friend John,

how he would stroke John’s hair as they nestled,

how they shared dreams and laughter,

how together they wished to change the world.

I think about how his friends suffered for Jesus’ love of others,

how he wasn’t always there for the special party,

yet they couldn’t help but understand and accept

because they too knew the joy of Jesus’ deep, selfless love.

I think of how Jesus loved his mother as every mother

yearns to be loved,

honoring, deferring to, generously forgiving,

trusting her with his life and passions.

And I think of myself, hoping to one day

be able to accept that this amazing love is also directed toward me,

so I try, often I try, to go deeper.

Reflection and Prayer

Like the Samaritan woman, take some time to be alone with Jesus today, in intimate, sacred dialogue. Be open to hearing and receiving what he says from his heart to you. Share with him what is on your heart. Perhaps he will tell you something about yourself that you thought was hidden. What would you ask of Jesus? What could happen during this time together that would energize you like the Samaritan woman?
