The Great Chasm
Too often the great chasm
is the fear that prevents us
from becoming vulnerable.
Reflection and Prayer
The rich man’s friends and family most likely thought of him as a good and loving person. After all, he did want to protect his brothers from suffering the same fate as him. It is not too difficult to imagine that the rich man’s conscience may have been pricked occasionally to offer some kindness to Lazarus, but he refused for fear of being ridiculed by those same friends and family. He refused to become vulnerable enough to love in even such a little way.
Imagine that you have the day off from all of your commitments and responsibilities. How would you spend your day, your favorite day so to speak? Then invite Jesus to be with you on that special day. As the day unfolds, welcome interactions with other people, various circumstances and honest conversation with Jesus to reveal to you where your fear of becoming vulnerable creates chasms in your life. What, if anything, would you like to change? What, if anything, would Jesus like for you to change? Ask for, and receive, his grace that this change may happen.
