New Dog, Old Tricks
I traded my church for a puppy –
hugs from hugs, kisses from kisses, friendship from friendship –
seeking unconditional love from a more reliable source,
offering unconditional love to a more willing recipient.
This transition has its trials and twinges,
joys and simple pleasures –
change can be hard and change can be good.
I asked God how She felt about all this
and love moonbeams warmed my heart –
either choice is good, either choice will disappoint,
either choice will lead to pain.
Yet I wonder who will cry with me when this new dog dies,
and I wonder what kind of funeral I will have without a church.
And cuddling with my dog is enough for now.
Loving my dog is enough for today.
