The Woman Caught in Adultery
John 8:1-11
Stones
She stands in the center,
afraid,
crying,
vulnerable,
feeling alone.
They hurled assaults
with the hope of inflicting pain
and shame,
to press on the fresh wound
with a sense of righteousness,
spitting mad
on the verge of escalating violence,
looking for stones, unaware
that it was the evil one who set them out.
Yet Jesus stood in the center also,
embracing her in her suffering,
embracing the suffering of all those present
and all those lost,
knowing that it was once again time
to write in the dust with his finger.
She had an abortion.
